YOUNG AUSTRALIA’S IN LONDON | DANI MILLIER
This week I had the opportunity to sit down with Dani Miller for More Time Financial’ s new Young Money series.
Dani Miller, is a 24-year-old Gold Coast local, who has recently returned from living in London for the past 2 years. It was great to hear about some of the adventures and challenges that she experienced while living overseas.
Dani explained that she was working two jobs, approximately 60+ hours a week and ended up selling her car to give her the funds she needed to buy a one-way ticket to London. One of the big financial challenges that Dani had to deal with was, like many other young Australians who normally get paid weekly. Moving to a monthly pay cycle made it difficult to manage when she had to wait a month before she saw her first pay slip. Adding to the problem was that you are required to pay a bond to secure a flat plus a month’s rent in advance. Dani explained that this was a challenging first month living away from home and the money she has been able to save up didn’t last long living in one of the world’s most expensive cities.
Living in London with the whole of Europe on your doorstep makes it an appealing place for any young person who is wanting to experience what else the world has to offer. Some advice that Dani had for anyone thinking about making the trip, was to just do it and figure out the rest when you get there. With a large Australian support network and endless information and resources through the Aussies in London Facebook page, Dani mentioned, this makes the move not as daunting as it may first appear to be.
With as low as $40 Australia dollars for a flight or train ticket from London to most countries in Europe, exploring countless countries is how Dani spent the majority of her 2 years aboard. Juggling between working different jobs and at one stage sharing a room with up to 3 other people, Dani explained that you just make it work and because you are there to have fun, saving money isn’t a priority. If it means that you have to eat 2 min noodles for a few days in a row, so you can afford a ticket to Oktoberfest, in Germany then that’s what you have to do.
